I take it that you are aware of a drive monitoring utility called smartd? By querying the drive after a new powerup, you may be able to extract usefull information about its health.

-- Cheers, Gene People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word 'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's stupid bounce rules.
