I tried mem=512m , swapoff -a and swappiness=0 and all works fine for me on
x86. I use Evolution and Firefox's KDE counterparts - in addition to that
Amarok, Kopete and Akregator fit in too.

Lee - Perhaps you are running fat 64 bit code?
