SubjectStrange network routing behaviour when routing locally generated packets
[1.] One line summary of the problem:

Strange network routing behaviour when routing locally generated packets

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:

I encountered two linked weird behavior of the network paquet routing
process
when used in conjonction with iptables' MARK-ing capabilities.

First it's impossible for a local process to send packets to a
destination that is not
available appart from a routing table selected by a 'ip rule add fwmark'.
ping process reply 'Network Unreachable' for example.

I must say that all does not occur when routing packet generated from
another computer.

And second, which is somehow related, if there is an available route
entry for a destination
that will be MARK'ed by iptables and then routed using a special routing
table the
source ip address for the packet will be the source generated from the
first route entry
even if the second entry specify another output device and source ip.

[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):

networking, advenced routing, iptables, local process

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
Linux version 2.4.27-3-686-smp (pbuilder@dl360-g3) (gcc version 3.3.5
(Debian 1:3.3.5-13)) #1 SMP Thu Sep 14 07:44:00 UTC 2006
Linux version 2.6.17-2-686 (Debian 2.6.17-9) (waldi@debian.org) (gcc
version 4.1.2 20060901 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-13)) #1 SMP Wed Sep 13
16:34:10 UTC 2006

[5.] Most recent kernel version which did not have the bug:
none known
[6.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information
resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
[7.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
problem (if possible)

# ip route show table 200
192.168.2.0/24 via 192.168.1.65 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.1
0: from all lookup local
32765: from all fwmark 0x1 lookup 200
32766: from all lookup main
32767: from all lookup default

# ip route show
172.31.254.0/28 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 172.31.254.2
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.1
172.24.16.0/21 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 172.24.16.1

# iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT --dest 192.168.2.0/24 -j MARK --set-mark 1

# ping 192.168.2.65
connect: Network is unreachable

# ip route add default via 172.31.254.1 dev eth1
# ping 192.168.2.65
PING 192.168.2.65 (192.168.2.65) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 192.168.2.65 ping statistics ---
1 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 0ms

at this point using a tcpdump icmp on host 192.168.1.65 show the following:

17:19:10.409085 IP 172.31.254.2 > 192.168.2.65: ICMP echo request, id
18957, seq 1, length 64

in other term the packet was correctly send to the wanted gateway but
using wrong
source ip address ( ip address derived from the default rule)

All this has been tested on a bunch of distro/kernels with allways the
same result.
