SubjectFile corruption with SATA
I recently added a Seagate 200GB SATA disk model ST3200822AS
to my PC, conected to the second SATA channel. On the first channel
I already have a Maxtor 6Y160M0 160 GB disk (XFS).
The motherboard is a Abit NF7-S rev 2 (NForce2 based), the SATA
controller is a SiI3112 integrated on the MB. See boot.msg below for
details.
I'm running SuSE 9.1 with kernel 2.6.7 (see .config below) with the IDE Sata
driver, but today I installed kernel 2.6.8.1 and libata driver with the same
results.
The problem: I copied about 85GB of files (ranging from 500 to 1800MB in
size each) from the Maxtor disk to the Seagate disk, configured with three
partitions (two data, one swap) and LVM+XFS.
All files ( I mean ALL) were corrupted. Running cmp on the original and
the copied files revealed hundreds of bytes changed for each file.
Fortunately I hadn't moved the files, just copied......
I partitioned the disk without LVM and formatted with Reiserfs, no change.

Things I tested:
- RAM is OK, memtest revealed no errors
- Seagate test tool found no errors
- Disabling DMA with hdparm -d0 cured the problem (but performance is
2-3 MB/s on writes instead of 40-50)
- Setting the disk to other udma levels made no difference, could not
set the disk to PIO mode
- Files copied from another disk connected to the NForce PATA controller
tested OK
- Swapped channels (and cables), booted from Suse 9.1 DVD in rescue mode
and copied
files from Maxtor to Seagate: even more errors
- Copying from Seagate to Seagate is OK, from Seagate to Maxtor is OK as
well.

Then I noticed that small files are not affected.
I created files of increasing sizes with:
dd ibs=1024 count=XXXk if=/dev/zero of=test
copied and compared the test file.
Up to XXX=300 (307200kB) no errors at all,
at 350-400 sometimes, at 500 (512000kB) the corruption always occurs.

I performed this test by creating the file on the Maxtor, then I copied it
to the Seagate and compared them. If I created the file on the Seagate,
copied
to the Maxtor and compared the file, all was fine.

It seems that copying large files from a Sata disk to a Seagate (I hope
only this model) on the other Sata channel leads to badly corrupted data.

I hope someone can fix it. Until then DON'T DO IT.
