it turns out that this was the side-effect of me doing idle=poll.
The reason for the lockup was a bug in the -RT patch, it broke disable_hlt() which resulted in all CPUs spinning in idle with interrupts disabled - with an obvious hard lockup as a result. Fixed it in my tree.
