IIRC some weeks ago I've verified 13 Mbytes/second using an el cheapo external box with both USB2 and IEEE-1394 (tested with the latter), a Maxtor 6Y120L0 and vanilla Linux 2.4.20
I've not the stuff handy now, but I'm almost sure of this number.
