Before: Linus used some homegrown scripts between releases. People had no way to look into his machine meanwhile. Linus accepted patches through email.
After: Linus uses some non-free tool between releases. Some people have no way to look into his machine meanwhile. Linus accepts patches through email.
Don't you see how much better things were before? ;-)
