    The smartd failure doesn't look harmless:

    Device: /dev/sdb, SMART Failure: DATA CHANNEL IMPENDING FAILURE DATA ERROR RATE TOO HIGH

    Or does this always happen?

    I assume we're dealing with a non-fs request here.
