Could you try to figure this one out a bit more? This sounds like a real compiler issue, whether it is because egcs just happens to get the right result for bogus kernel source, of whether gcc-2.96 has problems..

Unrelated. This one is a known bug that hits if you are a bit unlucky with a race on deleting the pages from the inode page-lists. Fixed in the current prerelease patches on ftp.kernel.org.
