My system at home has an Intel 815 motherboard (video, sound and network are
included into the motherboard), and works quite well with 2.4.0. I was able to
use its graphics card (obviously, because it's an i815), sound (with ALSA)
and... surprise!... network card!
You just have to use the eepro100 driver (from the mainstream 2.4.0 kernel),
and the netcard will work (i use the eepro100 driver compiled as a module). I
posted this tip few days ago to the Intel netcards newsgroup.

Previously, with 2.2 kernels, i had to use Intel's non-GPL e100 driver,
because the eepro100 driver from 2.2 kernels didn't worked with my card.
