I am seeing exactly the same problem under 2.4.0-test7. Mine is a little different. I'm using the Promise Ultra66 controllers (I have 2). It works fine on 2.2.15pre13 with the uniform IDE 6.30.
The system locks up in the same fasion (No SysRQ, complete lockup) when lvm starts (which scans all the drives)
