FWIW...
I have a set of Pentium Pro machines connected by 100 MBit ethernet. I've been testing the bonnie I/O benchmark over nbd. Using 2.4 kernels up to test6, bonnie would hang when using backing files 100MB and larger. Using the test8 kernel, bonnie seems to work fine.
