Ok. On our server (heavily loaded server) there are usually 500-800 apache processes. Each has SIZE of 60MiB (sometimes 80MiB). Without overcommit you'll need 30GiB (!!) of swap just to make system happy. Even if now only 512MiB of RAM and no swap is enough...
