Whats going on is that the emu10k makefiles don't set CPU= and thus generate incorrect binaries for the kernel. Its not stunningly obvious that you need to set this I grant but you do.
Because they are the module they inherit valid kernel version info for their miscompiled object so that it loads and explodes
