/etc/nsswitch.conf: hosts: files dns
/etc/hosts:
ip.of.named.host name.of.named.host ip.of.other.host name.of.other.host
Give explicite IP/name mappings for those which you don't want to be looked via the resolver.
This is, of course, system-wide, but use it sparingly.
