Are you confusing MySQL with msql? With larger tables
optimizing you indexes is important, but I have used MySQL wel beyond
the 500,000-1,000,000 mark (8 - 10 million rows is about normal
for most of our logging and capture systems).

and they don't carry large enough packets fast enough...
