I don't know what the problem could be, but as a workaround you could try enabling ide-scsi emulation and using scsi drivers. Maybe it helps, maybe not -- but it might be worth a try.
ide-scsi is meant mainly for cd-r burners but I suppose it works fine with ordinary cdrom drives too.
