    We tried something like that for Alpha in the pre-2.0 days. Linus
    rejected the header file changes, and we were left with a bag of kernel
    patches for 2.0.x that had to be kept up so that libc could build.

    It sucked. Hard.

    You'd have to get Linus to buy into such a scheme, and he won't.
