SubjectRe: Linux 2.2.11 Hang
I, too, am getting repeated hangs under 2.2.11, while the same machine
is rock solid under 2.2.10. The circumstances of the hangs sound
similar to those reported by Mark G. Adams <madams@livepage.com> and
Petri Kaukasoina <kaukasoi@elektroni.ee.tut.fi>.

The machine in question has been using 2.2.11 for two days, and has
hung four times:

1. While copying a backup archive onto an IDE Zip disk, the machine
froze up. I could still see my X desktop, but the display was no
longer updating and the mouse and keyboard were completely
non-responsive. After rebooting using the <Reset> button, no
interesting information whatsoever is found in the system logs.

2. Attempting to connect from home, I find that the SSH daemon (the
only way in from outside) is not working. I don't remember
whether it was refusing connections, or whether it was simply not
responding at all. An office mate with access to the console
reports that the mouse and keyboard are not responsive, and
reboots using the <Reset> button. No interesting information
whatsoever is found in the system logs.

3. Attempting to connect from home, I again find that the SSH daemon
(the only way in from outside) is broken. In this case I can
specifically remember that connections were *refused* on the sshd
port. However, "ping" works fine. This time, I come in myself
to reboot the machine. The console mouse and keyboard are not
responsive, and no interesting messages appear in the system logs
after reboot.

4. While sitting here at the console composing this message, the
machine hung yet again. X desktop is visible but frozen, and
mouse and keyboard are not responsive. Nothing interesting in
the system logs.

I realize that's not much to go on. If there is anything else I
should try, please let me know. In the meantime, I'm going back to
2.2.10.
