Subjectinitrd broken (was Re: 2.3.9+ and initrd)

I'm pretty sure it's broken.

I think it got broke along with the other fs stuff around 2.3.6. What
happened back then that broke the the filesystems? I will attempt to fix
it, but some insight would be helpful.
