I had the same problem. It seems to cure if you set your sound playing application to higher priority than everything else.
My system: AMD K5-PR90 48Meg RAM If I set kmp3 to nice value -5 I can safely compile stuff which sometimes involves using swap (c++).
I decided that a good rule of thumb in this situation is _NOT_:
The processes at the same priority level N are equally likely to _receive_ the same share of processing time.
Rather:
The processes at the same priority level N are equally likely to have their processing time _taken_ from them.
