SubjectRe: hdd & sound

I had the same problem. It seems to cure if you set your sound playing
application to higher priority than everything else.

My system:
AMD K5-PR90 48Meg RAM
If I set kmp3 to nice value -5 I can safely compile stuff which sometimes
involves using swap (c++).

I decided that a good rule of thumb in this situation is _NOT_:

The processes at the same priority level N are equally likely to _receive_
the same share of processing time.

Rather:

The processes at the same priority level N are equally likely to have
their processing time _taken_ from them.
