Not everyone should hack kernels. I don't try to to fix the brakes on my car and am perfectly happy that arthocscopic surgery is limited to an "elite" group. On the other hand, I think that more support for driver writers who don't want to understand the kernel and who have specialized hardware knowledge is an excellent idea.
