on both boxes 4k blocks fine: SMP box (extradowngrade to 128MB) Adaptec AIC-7880U (uw hds) (checked with tarballs ~500MB-1GB, mysql db with >500mb)
probs: UP box (128MB) Adaptec AHA-2940U2 (u2w hds) (tarballs 20MB-250Mb)
