I tried the PIO autotuning feature of hdparm under kernel 2.3.3 with PIIX support. I have an Abit BH-6 board ( Intel BX chip set, PIIX4, Teac CD532E-B secondary master )
When doing hdparm -p /dev/hdc or hdparm -p 4 /dev/hdc then hdparm prints a message about tuning and then just hangs for pretty long time. After a minute or so I rebooted.
