Joys ;( Good to know though since I also use the mix-n-match approach to
bug hunting.

Can you try an experiment -- compile with -fvolatile?

It's worth noting my i586 & i686 are both running 2.2.5 compiled with
egcs development sources on Apr 1/Apr 2.
