I have an AIC-7895 with a single SCSI hard drive on Channel A, ID 2. When I try and insert the aic7xxx module, I get:
# modprobe aic7xxx scsi1 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.12/3.2.4 <Adaptec AIC-7895 Ultra SCSI host adapter> scsi2 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.12/3.2.4 <Adaptec AIC-7895 Ultra SCSI host adapter> scsi : 3 hosts. Vendor: QUANTUM Model: VIKING II 9.1WLS Rev: 5520 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 8, scsi1, channel 0, id 5, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 13, scsi1, channel 0, id 11, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 17, scsi1, channel 0, id 15, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 18, scsi2, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 19, scsi2, channel 0, id 1, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 etc.
(scsi0 is ide-scsi)
The modprobe sometimes completes and sometimes appears to hang indefinately. After doing this, modprobe sd_mod always produces:
# modprobe sd_mod Detected scsi disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 20, scsi1, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 SCSI host 1 abort (pid 20) timed out - resetting SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 channel 0. SCSI host 1 channel 0 reset (pid 20) timed out - trying harder SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 channel 0. SCSI host 1 abort (pid 20) timed out - resetting SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 channel 0. SCSI host 1 channel 0 reset (pid 20) timed out - trying harder SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 channel 0. ... (last 4 lines repeat about once every 5 seconds for ever).
This is the same in at least 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.2ac5, 2.2.3, 2.2.3ac2, 2.2.3ac4.
In 2.0.36, I get: # modprobe aic7xxx scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.2/3.2.4 <Adaptec AIC-7895 Ultra SCSI host adapter> scsi1 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.2/3.2.4 <Adaptec AIC-7895 Ultra SCSI host adapter> scsi : 2 hosts. Vendor: QUANTUM Model: VIKING II 9.1WLS Rev: 5520 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Detected scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 (scsi0:0:2:0) Synchronous at 40.0 Mbyte/sec, offset 8. SCSI device sda: hdwr sector= 512 bytes. Sectors= 17836668 [8709 MB] [8.7 GB] sda: sda1 # and everything works as expected.
I don't know if it is related or not, but I noticed that when compiling the 2.2.x kernels I get:
make[2]: Entering directory `/mnt/src/linux/drivers/scsi' gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/mnt/src/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-\frame-pointer -D__SMP__ -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -m486 -malign-loops=2 -malig\n-jumps=2 -malign-functions=2 -DCPU=686 -DMODULE -c -o sd.o sd.c gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/mnt/src/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-\frame-pointer -D__SMP__ -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -m486 -malign-loops=2 -malig\n-jumps=2 -malign-functions=2 -DCPU=686 -DMODULE -c -o sd_ioctl.o sd_ioctl.c /mnt/src/linux/include/linux/blk.h:397: warning: `do_sd' defined but not used /mnt/src/linux/include/linux/blk.h:421: warning: `do_sd_request' declared `stat\ic' but never defined scsi.h:639: warning: `end_scsi_request' defined but not used ld -m elf_i386 -r -o sd_mod.o sd.o sd_ioctl.o
Any ideas gratefully appreciated.
