Yes, the '*' means that the DRIVE is trying to use that mode.
In this case, it looks like the drive and the chipset disagree on modes, so UDMA probably won't work very well on the cdrom.
You can try: hdparm -X66 -d1 /dev/hdd which will place the cdrom into UDMA mode2.
