    SubjectIDE-SCSI + SCSI tape, 2.2.2

I've had continual problems with my IDE tape drive, an HP Colo 8GB. The
most recent configuration uses the SCSI tape driver with IDE-SCSI
emulation. The kernel is compiled monolithically, with SMP. I've often had
backups work immediately after a reboot but fail the next day. On this
occasion, the tar command quit with an I/O error after writing 0 bytes,
and the following is output by dmesg:

    kmem_free: Bad obj addr (objp=cf89a100, name=uid_cache)
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address
