I've had continual problems with my IDE tape drive, an HP Colo 8GB. The most recent configuration uses the SCSI tape driver with IDE-SCSI emulation. The kernel is compiled monolithically, with SMP. I've often had backups work immediately after a reboot but fail the next day. On this occasion, the tar command quit with an I/O error after writing 0 bytes, and the following is output by dmesg:
