Subject2.3.22pre[12] on i686: Boot failure

Using egcs-19991013, binutils-2.9.5.0.16: When booting, a dozen or so
messages "VM: killing process modprobe" show up after init starts; the
processing of the various scripts for runlevels works extremely slowly,
while spamming that modprobe can't find modules.dep (obvious, hasn't been
created yet). I don't know if the boot will complete at all, it seems to
freeze after (trying to) load keytable.

Sugestions?
