Hello all,
I seem to be having a problem with ppp-2.3.5 and the new 2.2.0pre* kernels. It seems that after connecting seeing:
Jan 6 01:13:05 paranoia pppd[3762]: Serial connection established. Jan 6 01:13:06 paranoia pppd[3762]: Using interface ppp0 Jan 6 01:13:06 paranoia pppd[3762]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
my machine cannot negotiate LCP with the answering server. My machine sends the first LCP ConfReq (0x1) and never sees a ConfAck (or Nak), although the other server sends ITS ConfReq and my machine Acks those.
Here's a bit of pppd DEBUG:
# This is a try with a 2.2 kernel. Dec 31 05:41:03 paranoia pppd[960]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xf63ac4f5> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:06 paranoia pppd[960]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xc3af5cf7> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:06 paranoia pppd[960]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xc3af5cf7> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:06 paranoia pppd[960]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xf63ac4f5> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:09 paranoia pppd[960]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x3 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xc3af5cf7> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:09 paranoia pppd[960]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x3 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xc3af5cf7> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:09 paranoia pppd[960]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xf63ac4f5> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:12 paranoia pppd[960]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x4 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xc3af5cf7> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:12 paranoia pppd[960]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x4 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xc3af5cf7> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:41:12 paranoia pppd[960]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xf63ac4f5> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Notice I promptly ack all the ConfReqs, yet the other machine never acks or naks mine. This leads me to believe that possibly my LCP ConfReqs are either malformed or not really being sent at all. This also means I can't move to IPCP and get an assigned ip.
Also, pppd "kdebug" reports:
Jan 6 20:07:58 paranoia kernel: ppp: tossing frame (e0)
This is the only difference that shows up between running in 2.0.37pre and 2.2.0pre.
I did NOT have this problem with the 2.0 kernel series.
Here's a bit more debug of a succesful dialin with a 2.0 kernel.
# This is a good one with a 2.0 kernel. Dec 31 05:46:11 paranoia pppd[147]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xe35e3204> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:46:11 paranoia pppd[147]: rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xe35e3204> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:46:13 paranoia pppd[147]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x4705a5bb> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:46:13 paranoia pppd[147]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x4705a5bb> <pcomp> <accomp>] Dec 31 05:46:13 paranoia pppd[147]: sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 <addr 0.0.0.0> <compress VJ 0f 01>] Dec 31 05:46:14 paranoia pppd[147]: rcvd [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 <compress VJ 0f 00> <addr 207.43.214.240>] Dec 31 05:46:14 paranoia pppd[147]: sent [IPCP ConfAck id=0x1 <compress VJ 0f 00> <addr 207.43.214.240>] Dec 31 05:46:14 paranoia pppd[147]: rcvd [IPCP ConfNak id=0x1 <addr 208.15.222.45>] Dec 31 05:46:14 paranoia pppd[147]: sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x2 <addr 208.15.222.45> <compress VJ 0f 01>] Dec 31 05:46:14 paranoia pppd[147]: rcvd [IPCP ConfAck id=0x2 <addr 208.15.222.45> <compress VJ 0f 01>]
Notice it only takes one req and ack from each machine to move on.
Here's some possibly pertinent information:
i have tried this with all 2.2.0pre kernels with all ac patches. (pre1-5) ppp-2.3.5 (kernel not patched with ppp "make kernel" so kernel ppp ver is 2.3.3) net-tools 1.49 route 1.95 (1998-06-29) ifconfig 1.37 (1998-12-05)
I can't say that I'm positive this is a kernel problem, but as I stated before "It works nicely with 2.0.x kernels." If any more information is needed, please let me know and thanks for any info/help you guys can give me.
