In a previous mailing to the list I had mentioned a problem with Linux 2.2.0pre5 connected to a Solaris 2.6 NFS server. It appears as if this problem only manifests itself when starting xterm with a login shell (i.e. not as a subshell) and running ls, until I do a first cd. After that it's fine. If I try to strace ls, it's fine. If I try to sh -c ls, it's fine. If I do a normal login or use screen(1) it's fine. It's only right after I open an xterm, starting X as myself on the command line. I'm baffled, and still hunting down the problem.
