If redhat disable nis. (/etc/nsswitch.conf)

Also tar is MUCH slower if the owner of the tar'd files doesn't have an account on your system.
(Bug in tar, but give torvalds UID 1046 GID 1046 an account and watch things fly).
Quite amusing really , Linux builds much faster if the machine is torvalds friendly ;).

That has to be about the funniest bug in GNU-Linux yet.

I wonder what happens if we give "stallman" an account ? Does the machine slow to a crawl while
it argues the ethics of free software with you ?

The tar from "paxutils" hopefully has this bug fixed, but it's still in beta.
