AFAIK, it is a workaround for a gcc-2.7 bug discovered by John Davis. I believe it was fixed quite some time ago in gcc-2.7.[2-3], and almost certainly does not exist in egcs. Linus is just being careful and conservative with defaults (who can blame him?).
