you can put the kernel in usr/local/bin for all the system cares. just make sure that it's correctly pointed to in /etc/lilo.conf
then ALWAYS make sure to run lilo after changing the lilo.conf, otherwise the system won't boot.. I usually just leave my kernels laying around the root directory..
