I saw similar problems when I started using the later AIC7xxx drivers. I suspect that the problem has to do with the handling of external devices. On my HP Vectra XU, the BIOS has a setting that disables ultra (20 MB/sec) transfers when any devices are attached to the external 68-pin connector. I believe that recent AIC7xxx continue to try to transfer an 20MB/sec even when the BIOS is so configured and such external devices are attached (despite the fact that the total cable length may be 7 feet or more). I solved this problem by taking a surplus AVA1505 out of the closet and attaching some of the external devices to that controller; those who don't have such a well stocked closet may not be able to get around the problem that way...
