Unfortunately if you revert this patch I can't even mount my HFS partitioned disks under 2.2pre. People will have similar problems with unformatted disks, with Linux crashing on boot every boot with some corrupt partition tables.
So a 'correct' fix badly needs finding. But yes the current fix isnt
