I will guess that this is a smart-capable drive and smart has failed. I suggest that you backup and consider a drive replacement. This is assuming that just before you get this message, the drive grunts.
I have just had this problem on an 8GB drive, and I am trying to figure out how to have the kernel report smart-failure.
