It's a bug. It's fixed in pre-2.1.123-2, and if you can re-create it just holler..
It's very easy to test for, btw. Just do a
cat nonexistant-directory/filename
and 2.1.123-1 will incorrectly return ENOTDIR (which while sensible is definitely incorrect), while a correct kernel will return ENOENT.
