The kernel doesn't have a resolver, the kernel only sees addresses, not hostname.
Personally, I prefer access based on networks/netmasks and thats a more sane approach, by hostname is flawed because I can't always tell what some bunny is going to put in the DNS when the DNS is managed outside of my local-network and domain of immediate control.
