Actually - I am a little.
A few years ago, it seemed lots of applications needed STREAMS. I've asked around recently with various vendors and people I know, and most seem to have gone the socket way by now.
I don't think STREAMS should be excluded on these grounds alone, but it does only seem useful for making legacy code run.
