Here's an updated version of the patch that corrects many incorrect asm
statements throughout the kernel. This one is against 2.1.119.

Pre-purchase testing a Toshiba 330CDT, P266, I installed 2.1.119 +
l-con118 + your patch + patch-2.1.120pre2
apm_bios returned to its very old habit of issuing the mesg.
apm_bios: set display ready (standby) : unknown error code 0x09
I backed out your patch and apm returned to its normal (still buggy, but
quiet) state.
You might want to take a look at the asm code in drivers/char/apm_bios.c
