Can you as "davem" send a SIGKILL to me as "torvalds"? No.=20

What you do, is you ask a XFree86 person very nicely whether he could =

a line to the XF86Config file that adds a new configuration option, na=

Thanks for the clarification, I completely understand now.

We already have bodyguards. That's why normal users don't get to kill the
president.

If the presidents wife for some reason thinks she has a reason to take a
shotgun to her president, that's not something bodyguards are there for. =
I

Ensure you have the right major number on your ptys. major=3D4 is defunc=

in 2.1.115.

$ ls -l /dev/ptyp0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 2, 0 Aug 13 01:07 /dev/ptyp0

MAKEDEV-2.3.1 (eg. from latest Slackware) will fix it for you.

THe Xeon is support from 2.1.110 or so upwards. I don't think its
significantly different to a Preventium II so hopefully won't suffer
any Xeon specific stability problems....

(unless Intel do weird stuff in the next Xeon chipset release like
they did with BX and something screws with things here...)

printk("try_to_unuse: entry %08lx "
"not in use\n", entry);

I believe I had the above section of code from swapfile.c (lines 338 and
339) show up on shutting down 2.1.115 the other day. I have never had
it show up before. I am pretty sure that was it. It was after syslog
had shut down (RedHat standard init pretty much) and I believe after
disks were unmounted. The error looked very much like that if not that
(didn't right it down, was in a hurry).

I am not sure if this will all help but anyway here goes circumstances.=20
My machine had been up for most of the day. Usage was very high
(loadavg of about 7 to 10), memory was tight as well. Easily 40 meg
into swap some of the time with 72 meg of real RAM. Standard RedHat 5.1
with most updates and a few custom changes to inittab and other system
configs to make it more stable, secure, and work with multiple 2.1.x
kernels easily.

If I see the message again I will make sure to give a better report.

Anyway, 2.1.115 seems awesome most of the time on this Pentium 133 (with
the above config), but sometimes it seems to get rather slow... rather
meaning, I notice a slow down from 2.1.106 and it irritates me. I am
not sure most would notice it, but they may. I will try to figure out
exactly how and where it is slower and post what I find. It may not
help much since I am no kernel guru, especially with the code freeze and
all.

Heh. Unfortunately, one of the disks in the 4x9 GB array didn't seem
happy, so I decided to back out of the change so we can replace the
disk. This isn't a hot-pluggable RAID but just a Linux md array, so I
didn't want to bring it online with bad disks in it.

Stay tuned...

I haven't heard anybody else complain about this, but I managed to mess
up patching, and downloaded 2.1.115.tar.gz from ftp.funet.fi. I had to
manually make the two "modules" directories, as well as copy in
"autoconf.h" from a previous build (kernel patched up to 2.1.107, I
think) After that, building worked perfectly, and I'm using the kernel
as we type.

Of course, could be that I did something wrong during unpacking, but I
can't for the life of me imagine what that might be? Anyway, not a
problem for me, but I thought you'd might like to know.

I upgraded from egcs-2.91.43 (980628) to egcs-2.91.53 (980803), changed t=
he
compilation flags (from -mpentiumpro to -mpentiumpro -malign-functions=3D=

I therefore think the bug was causewd by the egcs, always being (too?)
aggressive in optimization. (Might also be a kernel bug, missing a volati=
le,
or similar.)
I also noticed, that optimization became a little bit worse in the latest
snapshot.

I tried running 2.1.115 yesterday, but found that I couldn't NFS mount
anything - the mount program just hung uninterruptibly, as did the amd

On the off-chance that it gives someone a clue, I've stuck my kernel

Not in, not completely out, it changes include/linux/soundcard.h without
changing anything else... which prevents the kernel from being built at l=

No, look:

diff -u --recursive --new-file v2.1.114/linux/CREDITS linux/CREDITS
- --- v2.1.114/linux/CREDITS Tue Jul 21 00:15:29 1998
+++ linux/CREDITS Thu Aug 6 11:13:43 1998

Count the number of slashes in each name. You will see that they are
not the same, which is bad. Patching results will vary with the version
of the patch program that you use.

Good: 1/2/3/4/foo.c paired with a/b/c/d/foo.c
Bad: 1/2/3/4/foo.c paired with x/y/z/foo.c

Fixed header:

diff -u --recursive --new-file v2.1.114/linux/CREDITS v2.1.115/linux/CRED=
ITS

X has been known to do it - when its catching signals to clean up nicely
on a real X problem (eg out of memory)

Ok right. Now I see your model with that bit. The X server "traditional
sense" sends a message to the "not X server" to do the mode shift. And
the notXserver piece is the is the small module thats not the user
and has to be correct.=20

The X server core is from the X consortium via its assorted members and
original team. The original PC server code is from Thomas Roell a very
long time back (Thomas is part of Xig nowdays)

The situation *is* really quite simple. Video drivers belong in=20
the kernel.

Jon

* end quote *

I disagree with you here. But only partially. My understanding of KGI
may be very flawed, but I will refer to my understanding of it here.

The Kernel is not necessarily responsible to have drivers for every
device in it. But, in a true OS desing such as Linux or Unix, its job
is to arbitrate, control access to, and provide a consistent interface
to all devices of same type.

It is my understanding that KGI/GGI (together here, because I think it
is both in this case) provides just the absolutely needed parts in the
kernel to provide safety, security, and stability. The rest I believe
is user space. (No, I am not educating you on a project you take more
part in than myself... I take none, just try to stay up on
design/technical issues of it.)

The argument: I think in the case of video that the kernel interface
should be the absolutely smallest possible. I believe it was either
Einstein or Edison that said, "Things should be made as simple as
possible and no simpler." Put enough (Very small amount) of the code to
allow mode changing, register access, console stuff, etc, in the kernel
and leave the rest for user space libs etc to twiddle through some
interface (syscalls?).

Now, just like SCSI cards, this may mean what is in the kernel changes
depending on how much support (generic VGA) or the type of card
(Permedia 2) you want to support, but the interface to programs should
remain the same.

I will admit, when I mispoke and frustrated GGI people, Linux, and I
believe Alan and Dave as well when this debate last raged (8 mos ago), I
promised myself I wouldn't get involved in this debate ever again. I
just needed to speak my small part, especially the quote from whoever it
was that said it (I know it was one of the two). I think it is some
good words to live by in any software development project: be it kernel;
monolithic or microkernel, database, office suite, whatever.

Subject: Patch against 2.0.35 to enable the CDROM port found on many PSS =
sound cards for inclussion in 2.0.36 and possible bug in 2.0.35

This changes the code minimally, enables a previously unusable (under Lin=
ux)
useful device, and has worked flawlessly under my system for a while. I
would like to see this patch included in 2.0.36 so that other Linux users
with PSS sound cards can use the builtin CDROM port. See the previous
(included) post for details on the patch.

- - A. Barbachan

PS.

Possible bug in 2.0.35. Unlike, at least, 2.0.34 3.0.35 seams to hav=
e
some compatability problems with the module utilities 2.1.85. This probl=
em
is does not seam to appear in 2.0.0 so I am not sure if this is a bug. I
first noticed it after upgrading to Slackware 3.5 which included the modu=
le
utilities 2.1.85. The apparent bug displays error messages upon booting =
up
(using auto-loading modules (and I remember correctly attemping to
statically load modules). Message is something to the effect /proc/modul=
es
doesn't exist. On my system this message appears twice. After the booti=
ng
process is complete this problem seams to go away, though I cannot be sur=
e.
However the system failed to automatically load the previously request
modules so the booting process does not completely set everything up righ=
t.

Right now if the NFS mount hangs during mount you are screwed. The hung
process sits holding the semaphore used for mount/umount.

At the moment you can't interrupt synchronous RPC calls with the current
kernel rpc code. Its on my NFS list still. I need to work out why Olaf
put if ( 0 && in front of the relevant test

Hmm, AFAIR RedHat and Slackware (and probably all distribs) use exactly
that for changing to several of the runlevels...

Guys, can we please shut up about this?=20

- - Linus makes the patches, he does them as he sees fit.=20
- - The way they are they are perfectly fine for many, many people.
- - I've never seen a "patch program" that takes the wrong line from=20
the header. You need reasonably recent tools to make Linux kenels.=20
Patch might be one of the programs that needs to be "recent".
- - The person that started this thread certainly didn't read the docs an=

was using the wrong commandline args to "patch".=20

- - If you really want, add=20
sed -e 's/+++ linux/+++ v2.1.115\/linux/'=20
to your gunzip/patch command line.=20

Problem solved Lets get on with it OK?

At the moment you can't interrupt synchronous RPC calls with the
current kernel rpc code. Its on my NFS list still. I need to work
out why Olaf put if ( 0 && in front of the relevant test

Linus and I put that there. If you let that condition pass then the
deferred writebacks during close(fd) will try to return from the close
before finishing in the form of a restartable system call. This
breaks tons of programs out there, and we decided it was wrong
behavior so shut it off. See similar code in the deferred writeback
handling in fs/nfs/write.c and the IS_SOFT macro which is always
zero. It is part of the same thing.

Just for information :

Other unices ( IRIX and Solaris at least ) have gfx drivers.

I personaly believe this is the "proper way".

Subject: Xfree SVGA server and fbcon

Earlier I posted a problem using the XFree SVGA server and the
framebuffer
devices. I found the solution and its a problem with the SVGA server not
the kernel (not neccessarilly SVGA's fault)

My graphics card is an ET6000 based Lightspeed 128 and when fbcon is
used
the X server no longer detects graphics memory correctly. When setting
up X using the config program it comments out the memory line. Just
uncommenting the line in XF86config starts things working again. The
mis-detection causes really horrible screen corruption.

I posted this because it does look like a kernel bug until you realise
what is wrong.

Now just got to solve restoring X after switching to another
virtual console :-)

What do you expect?=20

The file gets opened by the shell here, and gets written to by=20
$user. That might fail on NFS, indeed.=20

Use=20
su $user -c "date > $file1"
or something like that to let $user open the file.

No. This is quite normal behaviour. In fact, the 2.0 kernel behaves
correctly, as do other unices.

This is different from what I want. Here the file is created and written =
to
by $user. And of course that works fine.
However, I want a file to be created by one uid, and then write to it by
another uid. Just as the script suggests.

No in user space - fbdev may use accel for things that can speed up
the console code, like recangular blitting and clearing, it does not
intend to provide some generic kernel accel API.

When you want to have accel control in user space, you tell fbdev and
it wont use acceleration for the console until the user space program
finishes with it.

We did not do that on purpose, ioctl =3D=3D context switch and we don't
want that.

Data point:

Saw this too when shutting down what I think was one of the 115 pre-patch
kernels. I'm sorry I didn't get any details but there was nothing in
syslog and I'd booted into 115 release which had wiped the old kernel. I
haven't seen it again and have shutdown about 4 or 5 times since then.=20

To be fair, the X code is rather old, has a history of maintenance by
suboptimal software engineering, and nobody of today's open software
developers really wants to deal with that. (Like at one point NCFTP was=20
rewritten from scratch because the old ugly BSD FTP code became
unmaintainable, and that's tiny compared to X.)

Every time someone mentions a flawed svgalib program on bugtraq I
point them to the suid wrapper for svgalib I wrote ages ago. :-)
Nothing in the svgalib programs I run[1] on my box ever sees UID 0 and it=
=20
works properly.

That one simply execs instead of being a watchdog daemon, but perhaps
we should consider the latter idea further:

Okay, that looks very valid, but for one point: who does the console
switching? Console switching implies video mode switching so this has
to be done from the svgalib program itself, unless you link the
wrapper with svgalib too, which is a bit messy and would require
probably incompatible changes in svgalib (no two console switchers
fighting for the signals).

> properly in user mode. Why are there still people who want to try to
> change the kernel before they have even considered fixing SVGAlib etc?

Because svgalib is somewhat the wrong approach. It's device drivers in=20
user space. The same thing for XFree86.

> Linux isn't a Windows NT where you add cruft in the kernel to get aroun=
d
> cruft in user programs.=20

Video drivers in the kernel add cruft here to _get rid_ of the cruft
in user space, where it jeopardizes system stability. And that cruft
is result of the horrible mess the hardware it deals with is.
(Read the description of the 3c501 driver for comparison ;-)

> suid(0)+suid(xxx) rather than just suid(0)) and (b) SVGAlib doesn't
> require that the whole application runs with root privileges.=20

Actually it doesn't since some years ago the IOPERM environment
variable was added which means support for the above-mentioned wrapper=20
utility of the same name.
See <URL:http://sites.inka.de/~bigred/sw/ioperm.txt> dated March 28,
1994. I don't know exactly why this program wasn't simply added to the
svgalib distribution back then. Instead people keep claiming that you
need root even for running games you don't have the source for, which
is of course horrible.

olaf

[1] actually "ran"; since I installed a Millennium II it doesn't work
any more because of missing driver. As far as I'm concerned, it's gone=20
for good.
