I tried the instructions to reproduce the bug and I hate to add to a
possible flurry of 'me toos', but I thought this might be significant: On
a PPro180 with vanilla 2.1.112 and a Matrox Millenium 4 MB card the bug
appears very quickly (I see screen garbage for a fraction of a second) and
either completely locks the machine (no ping, no SysRq, no nothing) or
causes a hard reboot. Very nasty. I will try the SLOW_VGA option to see
if it has any effect.
