You'll find most kernels are too large to sit in this sector. So it therefore containeth not the kernel, rather a kernel loader.
This would be the place of dwelling for lilo.
Further clarification would be to inform you that the MBR sits not at the head of partitions, rather at the head of the disk. [Sector 0]
