Out of interested, can to tell me if there is any noticeable speed difference in buffer cache access between 2.0.x and 2.1.x on the alpha? (hdparm -T /dev/sda or something similar should be fine, run it a few times and ignore the first run).
I'm seeing 2.1.x as being about 15% slower which seems a little odd.

No idea, I don't follow egcs/gcc anymore. It can't hurt to report it. I think later compilers don't suffer from this so badly, but that might be because of an unrelated fix.
