Hi,
i'm sending this message because i think i have discovered a strange kernel bug, but i'm not sure about this.
I have a small LAN consisting of three machines:
- a Windows 98 machine (was Windows 95, problem was the same) - a Alpha Linux Box (Debian Distribution) running kernel 2.0.34 - a i486 Linux Box (Debian too) running kernel 2.0.35 (problem also occured with 2.0.34).
The machines are connected via RG58 cable.
The problem is, that the i486 linux has big problems contaction the other machines. The win98 and the alpha linux communicate happily without problems.
Sometimes after a while suddenly the i486 box can contact the other machines correctly, and this stays as long as the box is running.
I can often force the connections to work by connecting to one of my ISPs (only the one works) with PPP over ISDN. In the moment when the connection has been established (and the dynamical ip address has been set), the connections are ok, and the i486 box can reach the other machines on my lan.
This does not work always, and with my other isp it does work never. But with my other isp i have a static ip address, maybe that is the reason.
I know, this all sounds strange, but in my sight the last possible reason may be a kernel bug. I exchanged the lan adapters in *all* machines, changed the cables and so on. The problem is still there. IP-Addresses, Broadcast, Netmasks etc. are correct too.
I would really like to have this bug discovered and removed. If i can help you with additional informations, please let me know.
