SubjectSevere Network Corruption

Here is a typical example of the stuff the "pointy-haired" types
come up with. It was sent to me from an Engineer who works at a
small company (600 employees) in New York state.

[Heading snipped......]

It has come to my attention that there are many PC users who
are using foreign operating systems on the company-owned
machines. This must stop immediately.

(1) No computer operated within the company premises will
use any operating systems other than Microsoft Windows and,
alternately, Microsoft Windows-NT.

(2) No computer will execute any programs other than those
provided by the company.

(3) Computers that emulate Unix such as Lynx, are known to
cause severe network corruption. Any person using such
software will be presumed to be deliberately interfering
with company business and shall be terminated for cause.

(4) No computer will be connected to the network without
the express approval of the System Administrator or Network
Administrator for your specific local area.

(5) No machine will be configured to receive or send
electronic mail directly. All electronic mail will be
handled by specific servers assigned by the Network
Administrator for your specific local area.

(6) No person operating a computer within the company
network environment will "share out" or otherwise make his
or her computing resources available to others on the
network.

[More company rules.......]

Failure to abide by these rules will result in revocation of
your computer privileges or, alternatively, termination of
your employment by the company.

Note item 3. They don't even know how to spell the name! This is typical
company diatribe. Usually, Software Engineering is allowed to make their
own rules (which often means no rules at all). If you are involved in
Engineering, and can't boot ix86anyOS on your machine, find another
employer. Most employers will even provide a private, non-firewalled
connection to the Internet to keep their Engineers happy.

Also note the reference to "computer privileges". So now I know how
come the name-server gets 1000 hits/second looking up hotsex.

Cheers,
Dick Johnson
