Do you use a watchdog, by any chance? The watchdog driver program not
only handles the kernel or hardware watchdog, but also attempts to
properly reboot the machine when the load is too high... got bitten by
this _once_ and then set the limit to 50 (that's a single user machine
where 3 is high :-)
