Is it not possible to configure Linux to be able to use 10k or greater file descriptors (in 2.1.xxx) by tweaking /proc/sys/fs/file-max and inode-max? (shooting down the earlier comment regarding recompiling the kernel to allow 10k or greater file descriptors...)
