If your patch says things like segmentation fault I'd get the upgrade
anyway. Its obviously faulty. RH5.1 has an errata item for patch which has
the latest GNU patch on it (the maintainers fixed a few bugs)

The patch applies cleanly here (I've just tested it v a vanilla 2.1.106)
